You vs. You

Shaylin Wallace

We all have those moments when we try to compare our own individual journeys to everyone else’s. Truth is, that is not possible. How are you supposed to compare your life to someone else’s when you both are not even walking on the same path? In today’s society, it seems as if we have been conditioned to compare our lives to what one would call “unrealistic expectations”', especially when it comes to “celebrity culture.” At times, many of us start to compare where we’re at in life with celebrities mainly because of social media. Based on their profile, it seems as if they’re living their best lives. Truth is, we don’t really know what’s going on in their life. Social media can distort one's true reality since it’s basically just us posting what we want people to see (mainly the good stuff), so the whole truth will never truly be revealed.

You are on your own path, your own journey, your own exploration in what we call life. Who are you when you are alone? Who do you see in the mirror looking back at you? And no, these are not trick questions. Yes, sometimes that person in the mirror may not be the person you want to be, but who is able to change their destiny? Who is in control of your life? The answer to all of these questions is Y.O.U.

When you start to feel as if you're straying from your path, remember that there's always a way back on course. Do not focus on other people's paths as they have their own obstacles and hills to climb. Sometimes, we tend to watch other people live their lives and forget to enjoy our own. Why? Because seeing other people live the life we may desire is easier than us actually taking that first step to change our own. That first step is always the hardest because you don't know what path that step will lead you down.

Remember this: no matter how many obstacles you face, you have the power to push through. All you have to do is remember who you are. As creatives, we have those moments when we get creative blocks, feeling uninspired for long periods of time. That can make us feel lost or as if we're taking steps backward instead of forwards. When you feel like this: breathe, relax, and take some time to be alone with your thoughts. In order to get into what makes you feel whole, you must go within. For me personally, when I begin to feel as if I'm drifting away from myself, I meditate and then journal my thoughts. I’m not implying that this is easy because trust me, it's easier said than done. Sometimes it takes days, weeks, even months to find ourselves again, but in the end, we will always find ourselves.

You are in control of your thoughts and your feelings. One's inner battle is a battle that only we ourselves can fight. Although there may be people on the sidelines cheering you on, you must build up that strength within to actually make it to the finish line. We are all going through the motions, trying to better ourselves every day, pushing through the dark times that occur. Remember that you are not alone in this. There's always someone who can relate to what you're going through or maybe they're even going through the same thing as you, but you're just not aware of it. As long as you have you, you will always rise from the darkness and see the light at the end of the tunnel. Just remember who you are and eventually, you will always find your way back to yourself.

It’s you vs you.
